En las reuniones del bulteok hay una jerarquía histórica y asientos designados, las más jóvenes, y que por lo tanto quedan a los extremos de la fogata, son llamadas hagun; les siguen las junggun, y las más experimentadas y con el asiento central son las sanggun.

In the bulteok meetings there is a historical hierarchy and designated seats; the youngest, and therefore at the extremes of the bonfire, are called hagun; then come the junggun, and the most experienced with the central seat are the sanggun.

Bien saben las buceadoras que todo tiene su temporada y si quieren seguir manteniendo esta relación simbiótica con el mar —las Haenyeo también hacen buceos dedicados a recolectar basura del fondo marino—, deben de respetar los tiempos de las especies y del océano.

The diving women well know that everything has its season and if they want to continue maintaining this symbiotic relationship with the sea—the Haenyeo also do dives dedicated to collecting garbage from the sea floor—they must respect the times of the species and the ocean.

Las Haenyeo son una población ideal para seguir investigando sobre los cambios fisiológicos del buceo sobre el cuerpo humano: al igual que los Bajau, llevan miles de años practicando el buceo, pero a diferencia de ellos, lo hacen en aguas mucho más frías, y lo practican principalmente las mujeres.

The Haenyeo are an ideal population to continue researching the physiological changes of diving on the human body: like the Bajau, they have been diving for thousands of years, but unlike them, they do it in much colder waters, and it is practiced mainly by women.

Así que Melissa, siguiendo la invitación de su colega Joo-Young Lee de la Universidad Nacional de Seúl, y quien también participa en el estudio, decidió ir a Jeju para platicar con las Haenyeo, platicarles de la investigación y ver si querían participar.
