del = de + el, al = a + el. Mandatory contraction whenever `de` or `a` is followed by the masculine singular definite article `el` (but NOT before `Él` the pronoun, nor before proper nouns like `El Salvador`).
Examples
Vengo del banco.
→ I come from the bank.
de + el → del (mandatory).
Voy al cine.
→ I'm going to the cinema.
a + el → al (mandatory).
Vengo de El Salvador.
→ I come from El Salvador.
No contraction before proper-noun `El`.
