definite-articles

el / la / los / las / lo — definite articles agree with the noun in gender and number. Spanish uses them more than English (e.g. for abstract nouns, body parts, days of week).

Examples

Me gusta el café.
I like coffee.
Definite article used for generic concepts where English drops it.
La libertad es importante.
Freedom is important.
Abstract noun takes definite article in Spanish.
Los lunes voy al gimnasio.
On Mondays I go to the gym.
