noun gender

Sentence

Every Spanish noun is masculine or feminine, and the article must match: el for masculine, la for feminine. Most nouns ending in -o are masculine and most ending in -a are feminine, but the exceptions are frequent: el día, el problema, el mapa, el idioma (masculine despite -a), la mano, la foto, la moto (feminine despite -o). Feminine nouns starting with a stressed a- take el in the singular (el agua, el águila) but stay feminine: las aguas.

Examples

___ problema es difícil.
→ El
Problema ends in -a but is masculine — like most Greek-origin -ma nouns (el idioma, el sistema, el tema).
Me duele ___ mano.
→ la
Mano ends in -o but is feminine: la mano.
___ agua está fría.
→ El
Feminine nouns beginning with stressed a- take el in the singular; the adjective stays feminine (fría).
___ días son largos en verano.
→ Los
Día is masculine: el día, los días.
