que vs cual

Sentence

Both qué and cuál can translate 'what/which'. Use qué directly before a noun (¿qué libro quieres?) and to ask for a definition (¿qué es esto?). Use cuál/cuáles to pick from a set (¿cuál prefieres?) and before ser when you are NOT asking for a definition: ¿cuál es tu nombre?, ¿cuál es la capital? — asking ¿qué es tu nombre? would ask what a name IS. Cuál is rarely used directly before a noun in standard Spanish.

Examples

¿___ es tu número de teléfono?
→ Cuál
Selecting a specific value, not asking for a definition — cuál before ser.
¿___ es la filosofía?
→ Qué
Asking for a definition of philosophy — qué + ser.
¿___ libro estás leyendo?
→ Qué
Directly before a noun, standard Spanish uses qué, not cuál.
Hay dos rutas. ¿___ prefieres?
→ Cuál
Choosing between known options — cuál.
